Hider Of Lake Victoria: How To Reduce Stress Of Yssichromis Pyrrhocephalus

Yssichromis pyrrhocephalus

  • Common name:
  • Location and Lake collected from:  Mwanza Gulf, Lake Victoria
  • Approximate size:  3 inches
  • Food:  I have seen them eat flake and pellet foods.   They seem to do better when feeding several times a day.
  • pH:  7.4 – 8.2
  • Temperature:  76 – 80 degrees.
  • Breeding behavior:  Mouthbrooder.  Multiple males can be kept in the same tank.  Multiple females for each male is recommended.  In the ones I have seen the males did not have a set territory, they just kind of hung out in the tank.  They also seem to be more sensitive to water quality than most Victorian and related Cichlids.
  • Tankmates:  I have not seen them kept with anything else.
  • Tank size:  The ideal tank setup for this species (8-12 adults) would be a 55 gallon planted aquarium with a low level of light.
  • Additional notes: This species seems to stress easily and does better in a low light tank with multiple areas for them to hide in.
