Astatotilapia latifasciata photos
- Common name: zebra obliquidens also called Hap sp. Zebra. I have recently seen this species labeled as Haplochromis sp. Zebra Thick Skin.
- Location and Lake collected from: Lake Kyoga and Lake Nawampasa
- Approximate size: 4 – 4.5 inches
- Food: Will eat flake, brine shrimp, daphnia, mosquito larvae, and pellet food.
- pH: 7.6 – 8.2
- Temperature: 75 – 82 degrees F.
- Breeding behavior: Mouthbrooder. Males can be very aggressive towards the females continuously, not just around spawning time. It is best to keep this fish in a group of no less than 3 females and 1 male to help reduce aggression towards the females. Another way to help reduce aggression is to have a lot of rocks for the females to hide in.
- Tankmates: I have kept mine with Cynotilapia afra “Black Eastern”, and Labidochromis sp. Hongi. I have seen them kept with Haplochromis sp. All Red from Lake Edward, Neochromis rufocaudalis (nigricans), and Pundamilia nyererei Ruti Island without problems.
- Tank size: I have 6 juvenile females in a 20 gallon high aquarium.
- Additional notes: This fish is considered critically endangered in the wild and is listed on the 2000 red list for endangered species.
