Haplochromis guiarti “Red Eye”

- Common name: Red eye (Haplochromis Guiarti)
- Location and Lake collected from Lake Victoria
- Approximate size: 3.5″ is the largest I have seen.
- Food: This species is a piscivore. Accepts flake food.
- pH: 7.5 – 8.4
- Temperature: 75 – 82 degrees F.
- Breeding behavior: Mouthbrooder. I have not seen much aggression from this species. They just seem to hang out in the tank without anyone fish taking territory until they are ready to spawn.
- Tankmates: I have seen them kept with Yssichromis argens.
- Tank size: I have seen 19 fish of this species ranging in size from 2.5 – 3.5″ in a 70-gallon tank.
- Additional notes: This species is believed to be extinct in the wild. The fish pictured and described is at the Oklahoma City Zoo.
