Want To Know More About Fish? Profile of Haplochromis sp. Half Crimson

Haplochromis sp. Half Crimson

  • Common name:
  • Location and Lake collected from:
  • Approximate size:  4 – 4.5 inches.
  • Food:  Mine ate everything I gave them without hesitation.  They really liked the brine shrimp, and the mosquito larvae.
  • pH:  7.5 – 8.4
  • Temperature:  76 – 82 degrees F.
  • Breeding behavior:  Mouthbrooder.  My males were very aggressive towards the females and chased every other fish away from their territory regardless of whether or not the females were ready to spawn.  I was able to keep 2 males in the same tank as long as they both had a pile of rocks on their side of the tank.   My females needed a lot of caves to hide in.  Males start to show their adult coloration at around 1.5 inches.
  • Tankmates:  I kept mine with Psuedotropheus zebra “Chilumba”, Labidochromis caeruleus, Labidochromis sp. Hongi, Labidochromis sp. Perlmutt, Copadichromis borleyi “Red Fin Kadango”, and Psuedotropheus aurora without problems.  They did better with a lot of tankmates that were the same size or slightly larger than they were.
  • Tank size:  I had 9 adults in a 40 gallon (24x24x18) aquarium.
